A. Paké Zane is based in Honolulu Hawaii. He was born on the island of Maui where he grew up surrounded by cane fields and taro patches. His family later moved to Honolulu where he continued his schooling. He received a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from Weber State College in Ogden Utah and a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Hawaii in 1966. Paké believes his real education began when he set off on his lifelong dream, a ten year journey around the world where he lived in such places as France, Holland, Denmark, England, parts of Africa, Nepal, Thailand and Hong Kong to name a few. In Denmark he met Julie Lauster, a Minnesotan, who would become his travel mate, wife and business partner. One of his travel accomplishments was to traverse the entire span of the White Nile overland from its mouth in Egypt through the swamps of the Sudd in southern Sudan to its source in Lake Victoria. On another trip he and Julie traveled from Egypt overland through Eritrea to the source of the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. Paké and Julie arrived in Honolulu in 1976. Paké was always a collector of what he terms Cultural Artifacts. Now he was able start a small business buying, selling and trading antiques and collectibles at local venues or doing what he terms Cultural Recycling. Along with several others, he formed the co-op Antique Alley Honolulu in 1980. Paké is still there nearly everyday talking about the old days with customers and participating in show and tell with stuff in the store. “I get excited by stuff and knowing about stuff and passing that knowledge on to other people. That’s important to me. It’s also fun and fascinating.” Paké has consulted in estate liquidations and participated in numerous antique and collectible shows. He has been an active member of the Hawaii Historical Bottle Collector’s Club since the late 1970s. For the past twelve years he has written an informal column, Paké Sez, for a local newspaper, The Hawaii Antiques Art and Collectibles Quarterly. Paké joined the Antiques Roadshow as an appraiser at the Collectibles Table when they visited Honolulu for the 2007 season. He traveled to San Antonio, Louisville and Spokane as an appraiser for the 2008 season.
